Body Fat Percentage Calculator (US Navy Method)
The US Navy method is a widely used formula that estimates body fat percentage from a few simple circumference measurements.
The US Navy method is a widely used formula that estimates body fat percentage from circumference measurements; it can deviate by a few points compared to clinical methods like DEXA.
How Is Body Fat Percentage Calculated?
The US Navy method was developed in the 1980s to assess the fitness standards of military personnel, based on neck, waist and (for women) hip circumference measurements. For men, the difference between waist and neck circumference is used; for women, neck circumference is subtracted from the sum of waist and hip circumference — this value is combined with height in a logarithmic formula to estimate body fat percentage. While less precise than clinical methods such as DEXA or bioelectrical impedance analysis, it remains popular because it delivers a quick estimate without any equipment. For accuracy, measurements should be taken with the tape snug but not compressing the skin, at the same time of day and under similar conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure correctly?
Measure your neck just below the larynx, your waist at navel height, and (for women) your hip at its widest point — with the tape snug but not compressing the skin.
Is this method as accurate as DEXA?
No — circumference-based methods can deviate by a few percentage points compared to clinical imaging methods like DEXA. It's best used as a general tracking tool.
