Ideal Weight Calculator

Ideal-weight formulas offer only a general, height-based reference range — they don't account for factors like muscle-to-fat ratio.

The Devine formula, widely used since 1974, is a height-only reference formula for ideal body weight.

How Is Ideal Weight Calculated?

The Devine formula was developed in 1974 by Dr. B. J. Devine, originally for use in medication dosing calculations, and is based only on height. For men, 2.3 kg is added for each inch (2.54 cm) over 152.4 cm (5 feet) to a base of 50 kg; for women, the same increment is added to a base of 45.5 kg. Because the formula doesn't account for individual differences such as muscle mass, body frame, age or ethnicity, it's best treated today as a general reference point rather than a fixed target. A healthier approach to setting a personal, sustainable weight goal is to consider body composition and overall health together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should this result be a strict personal target?

No — it's only a general, height-based reference. A more personalized goal is best set by considering body composition and overall health together.
